How can we encourage sustainability in kids?

What does it mean to be green?

Encouraging sustainability in young kids is vital for fostering a mindset of environmental responsibility from early on.

What are some things that parents can do?

* Lead by example: our children mimic the behaviour around them. Show them sustainable habits in your own life such as recycling, saving water, turning the lights off. It all starts with setting a positive example for them to follow.

* Go Outdoor! Take your children for outdoor activities that promote appreciation to nature such as gardening, hiking, birdwatching, cleaning a beach, or create a nature scavenger hunt - make a list of items such as leaves, rocks, flowers and take them on a hunt in your favourite local park. Encourage them to observe and respect the environment around them.

* Go Fishing! take children fishing at a river, lake, pond, ocean.. and teach them about the fish species and the important of conservation while having some splash fun. 

* Story-telling: Kids love books! Introduce your children to those that promote environmental awareness and read them in a fun way that is easy to understand. ( A classic and all time favourite: "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss Through engaging rhymes and colourful illustrations, Lorax teaches how to protect the planet) 

* Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: teach your children the principles of reducing wate by using items efficiently, reusing materials when possible and recycling things at home such as paper and plastic.

* Celebrate progress! Make sure to celebrate the efforts of kids when they take small steps towards sustainability, no matter how small. Recognising and rewarding goes a long way in kids!

By incorporating such initiatives into your daily lives, you can help instill a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the environment in young children, setting them on a path towards a more sustainable future. Our planet needs us and them.
