Flying with a Newborn: Our Go-To Infant Travel Essentials

Giselle Makarachvili

The first time we flew with our son, I packed like I was moving countries: three changes of clothes "just in case," a full-size blanket, enough snacks for a toddler twice her age. By the time we landed, I'd learned the real lesson of travelling with a newborn: it's not about packing more, it's about packing the right infant travel essentials, the ones that actually get used between security and touchdown.

At TravelTod, we design for exactly that moment — the overnight flight, the layover meltdown, the diaper change in a tiny aircraft bathroom. Here's our go-to infant travel packing list, built from years of our own family trips in and out of Changi, and refined every time we think we've finally got it right.

Why Pack Light (But Right) When Flying With a Newborn

Every parent who's wrestled an overstuffed diaper bag through a jet bridge knows the problem isn't how much you bring — it's whether you can actually reach it when you need it. A newborn doesn't care about your itinerary; they care about being warm, dry, and held. So our packing philosophy starts with one question: will this earn its place in a bag I'm carrying one-handed while holding a baby?

That's also where sustainability and practicality meet. Bamboo fabric is naturally breathable and thermal-regulating, which matters more in transit than almost anywhere else — cabins run cold, strollers trap heat, and a baby who's too warm or too cool is a baby who won't settle. Fewer, better pieces also means less to lose track of in the overhead bin shuffle.

Our Go-To Infant Travel Essentials

After more trips than we can count, a short list has earned a permanent spot in our carry-on:

A proper travel organiser. Loose wipes, a spare onesie, and a half-opened pack of diaper bags at the bottom of a tote is how a two-minute changing-table stop becomes ten. We built our Travel Organiser around compartments that keep diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes separate and visible, so you're not digging with one hand while balancing a baby on the other hip.

A stroller bag that protects and stows easily. Gate-checking a stroller is one of the more stressful thirty seconds of flying with a baby — you want it protected, but you also want to be moving, not fumbling with straps while a queue forms behind you. Our Universal Stroller Bag folds down small enough for a seat pocket once you're through the jet bridge, and keeps the stroller fabric clean for the next leg.

A few bamboo layers, not a suitcase of them. Cabin temperature swings more than most people expect. We pack two to three lightweight bamboo onesies rather than a full wardrobe — soft against newborn skin, quick to layer, and easy to rinse out in a hotel sink if a feed goes sideways mid-flight.

Packing for the Cabin: What Actually Gets Used

If there's one thing every parent agrees on after a long-haul flight with a baby, it's that the "nice to have" items rarely leave the bag. What does get used, every single time, is simple: enough diapers for double the flight time (delays happen), one muslin cloth per hour of travel, a swaddle for temperature control, and snacks or feeds that don't require preparation at 35,000 feet.

We'd also add: pack your travel organiser the night before, not at the gate. The version of you rushing through security at 5am will thank the version of you who sorted everything into labelled pouches the evening prior.

A Few Singapore-Specific Tips

Flying out of Changi with an infant has a few genuine conveniences worth knowing about — nursing rooms are available past security in most terminals, and priority boarding for families with young children is almost always offered if you ask at the gate rather than waiting to be called. If you're connecting through a second airport, it's worth checking in advance whether it offers the same family lanes, since not every hub does.

For regional trips, a lighter packing list works in TravelTod's favour: our travel essentials are designed to multi-task, so the same stroller bag and organiser that get you through Changi do the same job on the way home, with far less to unpack and repack between flights.

And also, a tip many don't know-- you spend lots of money finding the right stroller and then you take it on your first trip and bring it back all scratched, and a damaged wheel. And you know what?  Unfortunately the airline takes ZERO responsibility! That's why we designed the stroller bag, its worth protecting it, whether you check it in with the luggage or drop it in the gate to make your life easier, you make sure that there is no damage. And when baby is no longer a stroller size little one, you can still use it to protect your luggages! :)

Travelling Light, Travelling Kind

Every piece in our Travel Must-Haves collection is designed the way we design everything at TravelTod — from premium, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified bamboo, built to be passed down or packed again for the next trip rather than replaced after one use. If you'd like a complete grab-and-go bundle, our Travel Explorer Gift Set pairs two of these essentials together, so you're not assembling your packing list item by item the week before a flight.

However you're travelling next — a short regional hop or the long-haul trip home to see family — we hope this list saves you a little of the stress we felt on that very first flight. Pack light, pack right, and enjoy the journey.
